The short answer
Mold remediation certification is a private credential, not a state licence. The main routes are the IICRC AMRT, a four-day course that requires WRT first; the IICRC MRS, an experience-based exam with no course; ACAC’s board-reviewed CMR and CMRS; and course certificates such as NORMI’s. Published 2026 fees from the IICRC, ACAC and training providers put the cost between $450 and $2,129.
Key takeaways
- The IICRC runs two mold credentials: AMRT is course-based with a WRT prerequisite; MRS has no course but needs 12 months of verifiable remediation field work.
- The cheapest accredited route is an exam: the IICRC MRS costs $450, against $1,719 to $2,129 for WRT plus AMRT at 2026 class prices.
- ACAC’s CMR and CMRS are CESB accredited. The IICRC lists MRS as ANAB accredited and AMRT as not accredited.
- OSHA does not certify individuals, so an online OSHA mold certification is a private course with borrowed branding.
- The federal UFGS 02 85 00 spec wants an on-site supervisor with three years of experience and an ACAC CMR or CMRS, an IICRC credential or an approved equivalent.

- Questions people actually ask
Search results for this question mix three things: courses that end in a certificate, bodies that test what you already know, and state licences. This page compares the private credentials on each body’s own rules and fees. For the job itself, see our mold remediation process guide and the operations hub.
The credentials, side by side
Six credentials come up when contractors compare options, and they split into two families. Course-based certificates (AMRT, NORMI CMR, MICRO CMRC) are earned by sitting a class and passing its exam. Experience-based certifications (IICRC MRS, ACAC CMR and CMRS) have no required class: you prove field experience on paper, then pass an exam.
| Credential | Entry requirement | Required course | Exam | Accreditation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IICRC AMRT | WRT completed; no experience | 4-day course | Online IICRC exam | Not accredited, per IICRC |
| IICRC MRS | 12 months verifiable mold remediation | None | 100 questions, 2 hours, 79% to pass | ANAB, per IICRC |
| ACAC CMR | 2 years field experience or college mix | None required | Closed book, 75 to 120 questions | CESB, technician level |
| ACAC CMRS | 8 years field experience or college mix | None required | Closed book, 75 to 120 questions | CESB, technician level |
| NORMI CMR | Course attendance | 24 hours (3 days) | 2-hour proctored exam | None stated by NORMI |
| MICRO CMRC | Course purchase | 30 hours online | Online final exam | None stated |
Accreditation is where marketing and fact drift apart. The ACAC accreditation page says CMR and CMRS are accredited by the Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB); no ACAC page consulted claims ISO/IEC 17024. The IICRC marks MRS as accredited by ANAB, whose personnel certification directory is organised under ISO/IEC 17024, but its notice does not name the standard, so check the ANAB entry if a contract requires 17024.
IICRC: AMRT first, then MRS
The IICRC AMRT page names one prerequisite, Water Damage Restoration Technician, and puts the emphasis on mold and sewage remediation. The IICRC MRS FAQ adds a 4-day course length and no experience prerequisite. WRT is a 3-day course of 19 hours excluding exam time and breaks, per the IICRC live-stream page. Per the IICRC FAQ, the AMRT exam costs $150 and the WRT exam $80.
The MRS is a different instrument. The IICRC handbook, updated 17 November 2025, requires a year of verifiable mold remediation field experience with employer details and a job list, and the IICRC MRS page says supervisory and inspection jobs do not count unless you did the remediation yourself. There is no course. The exam is 100 scored questions in two hours, and the IICRC sets the pass mark at 79%.
Removal and safety are almost half the exam, and the handbook lists ANSI/IICRC S520 (2024) and S500 (2021) as core references. Attempts are capped: one exam and one retest at $200 inside 90 days, then a one-year wait, per the IICRC handbook.

ACAC: CMR and CMRS
The American Council for Accredited Certification’s ACAC microbial remediation page says both credentials cover containment design, pressure control and removal or cleaning of contaminated materials. The difference is experience: two years for the CMR, eight for the CMRS, or a mix with college credit. Both need the unanimous approval of a certification board, the step course certificates skip. Per the ACAC exam page, exams are closed book, 75 to 120 questions, at a testing centre or by online video proctor.
According to the ACAC fee page, accredited certification costs $500 for the first two-year term, and the non-accredited CRMR, open to anyone currently employed in the field, costs $400. Do not confuse CRMR with CMR.
NORMI and other course certificates
The NORMI training page describes a 24-hour Certified Mold Remediator course ending in a two-hour proctored exam, renewed with recertification CEUs each year, and states that NORMI exams are accepted for licensure in Florida. According to its price page, Best Training School charges $1,399 for the three-day course, and the Zack Academy NORMI CMR listing puts the exam at $299 to $389 on top.
At the low end, according to Green Training USA, the MICRO CMRC is a 30-hour online course for $450. It names no accrediting body and no accepting state, so treat it as training with a certificate attached: useful for an estimator, not what a federal spec or licensing board names.
The OSHA certificate that does not exist
A top result for this search sells an online OSHA mold remediation certification. The OSHA mold standards page says mold is handled through existing standards, chiefly sanitation (29 CFR 1910.141 and 1926.51), not a mold rule, and the OSHA Outreach Training Program FAQ states that OSHA does not certify organizations or individuals.
The free option that is real is the EPA mold course, built on EPA’s 2001 schools and commercial buildings guidance. EPA certifies no one, but the page says ACAC grants 4 recertification credits for it, which makes it useful for keeping a credential current.

Cost to certify, by route
Certification bodies publish exam fees; independent schools set tuition. The table adds the two, using the lowest and highest 2026 class prices found. Travel and lost production days are extra.
| Route | What you pay for | Total |
|---|---|---|
| IICRC WRT then AMRT | WRT class $389 to $500 + $80 exam; AMRT class $1,100 to $1,399 + $150 exam | $1,719 to $2,129 |
| IICRC MRS | $150 application + $300 exam + up to $8 scheduling | $450 to $458 |
| ACAC CMR or CMRS | $400 certification + $100 exam | $500 |
| NORMI CMR | $1,399 course + $299 to $389 exam | $1,698 to $1,788 |
| MICRO CMRC | 30-hour online course | $450 |
The spread is tuition. The two IICRC exams cost $230; the other $1,489 to $1,899 of the AMRT route is seven classroom days, per the IICRC course lengths. An experienced remediator with a clean job log reaches an accredited credential for $450 via the IICRC MRS; a new hire cannot.
What it costs to keep it
Renewal rules decide the real cost over a career. IICRC technician credentials renew yearly; MRS and ACAC run two-year terms with audited continuing education.
| Credential | Cycle | Fee | Continuing education |
|---|---|---|---|
| IICRC technician (WRT, AMRT) | Yearly | $46 to $58, by certifications held | 14 CEC hours every four years |
| IICRC MRS | Two years | $400, one exam included | 20 CEC hours, or retake at 79% |
| ACAC CMR / CMRS | Two years | $400 | 30 professional development hours plus 10 active-practice credits |
| NORMI CMR | Yearly | Not published | Recertification CEUs |
| Florida licence, for comparison | Two years | Set by the state | 14 hours of continuing education |
Audits are real: the ACAC recertification procedures say a certificant who cannot document the 30 hours when audited surrenders the credential. Keep attendance certificates as you go.
Which one for which job
Match the credential to the person and the buyer, not the price.
| Your situation | Get this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New technician, no mold jobs yet | WRT, then AMRT | No experience prerequisite |
| 12 months of hands-on remediation | IICRC MRS | No course, $450, ANAB accredited per IICRC |
| Crew lead, 2+ years, wants board review | ACAC CMR | Board-verified experience, CESB accredited |
| Supervisor bidding federal facility work | ACAC CMR or CMRS, or the IICRC credential the spec names | UFGS 02 85 00, plus 3 years of experience |
| Senior remediator, 8+ years | ACAC CMRS | Supervisor-level ACAC credential |
| Work in Florida, Texas, New York or Louisiana | The state licence first | The state decides what counts |
| Residential work in Virginia | Any nationally recognized certification | Required by state consumer protection law |
| Office staff or estimator | MICRO CMRC or the free EPA course | Vocabulary, not a field credential |
The decision path
- Check the state. In a licensing state the licence is the gate; our state mold licensing map shows where.
- Count documented remediation months. Under 12, take WRT then AMRT. Twelve or more, with job records, apply for the MRS.
- Count years. Two supports the ACAC CMR; eight supports the CMRS.
- Read the buyer’s spec and hold exactly what it names.
- Book continuing education yearly so an audit is a formality.
What buyers and insurers put in writing
Plenty of marketing says carriers or commercial clients require a particular certificate. We list only requirements found in a published document, and we did not find a published insurer underwriting rule that names a mold certification.
| Buyer or rule | Document | What it asks for |
|---|---|---|
| Federal facilities (USACE, NAVFAC, AFCEC, NASA) | UFGS 02 85 00, August 2025 | Supervisor with 3 years of experience and an ACAC CMR or CMRS, the IICRC credential it calls AMRS, or an approved equivalent |
| New York state construction authority | DASNY 02 85 00, March 2024 | State Labor Department mold licences for contractor, supervisor and workers; no private certificate named |
| Virginia residential customers | Virginia Code 59.1-200(A)(81) | Certification from a nationally or internationally recognized body, and work to the EPA guide or ANSI/IICRC S520 |
| Florida remediators | Florida Statutes 468.8421 | General liability of at least $1,000,000 covering mold claims |
| New York licence applicants | Labor Law section 932 | Liability insurance of at least $50,000 |
| IICRC Certified Firm | IICRC application page | One certified technician, current liability insurance, $25 fee |
The federal spec is a template agencies edit; its own note tells specifiers to meet stricter state licensing rules. The New York document shows the other end: the licence replaces the private credential.
Where certification meets licensing
Certification and licensing are separate systems, and our state mold licensing guide and licensing map cover which states license the work. Where a licence exists, the state decides whether a private credential counts. Florida Statutes 468.8414 licenses remediators who pass the licensing examination and document training in water, mold and respiratory protection, and allows licence by endorsement for applicants who passed a nationally recognized certification exam the department has approved as substantially equivalent; the IICRC state licence page says its MRS exam is approved for the Florida remediator licence, and NORMI says its exams are accepted there. Texas offers no substitute: 16 TAC 78.58 requires the course described in 16 TAC 78.68, 40 hours for a contractor from an accredited provider, plus the state exam. New York Labor Law section 932 requires commissioner-approved coursework. Per the Louisiana contractor board, Louisiana requires 24 hours of board-approved training when a job exceeds $7,500. Virginia has no licence but makes selling residential remediation without a recognized certification a prohibited practice.
For contractors: building the file
The certificate is not a line item, but the paperwork behind it decides whether you can bid. The MRS handbook asks for employer, title, dates, a supervisor or HR contact and a job list, plus articles of incorporation from the self-employed. Start a job log on a new hire’s first mold job.
| Check | Where | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Look the person up in the issuer’s directory | IICRC Global Locator; ACAC certificant search | Wall certificates expire; directories are current |
| Read the full credential name | CMR against CRMR, AMRT against MRS | Similar letters, different requirements |
| Ask for the expiry date | IICRC yearly; ACAC and MRS two-yearly | A lapsed credential cannot go in a bid |
| Match it to the spec or statute | UFGS, state rules, client forms | The document decides, not the badge |
| Check the licence separately | State roster | A certificate does not replace a licence |
| Log every remediation job | Date, address, scope, role, supervisor | MRS applications and audits ask for it |
A company credential works differently. The IICRC Certified Firm programme needs one active certified technician, general liability insurance and a $25 fee, and the IICRC FAQ lists the annual renewal at $199. For what clients pay for the work, see our mold remediation cost guide.
Questions people actually ask
How do you get certified for mold remediation?
Pick the route by experience. With no mold jobs, take the IICRC WRT course, then the 4-day AMRT course and exam. With 12 months of documented hands-on remediation, apply for the IICRC MRS exam, which has no course. With two or eight years, the ACAC CMR or CMRS adds board review. In a licensing state, get the licence too.
How much does mold remediation certification cost?
Published 2026 fees from the IICRC, ACAC and schools put it between $450 and $2,129. The IICRC MRS costs $450 in application and exam fees, ACAC charges $500 for a first two-year term, and the WRT plus AMRT route costs $1,719 to $2,129 at listed 2026 class prices, mostly tuition.
Is there an OSHA mold remediation certification?
No. OSHA has no mold-specific standard and handles mold through existing rules such as sanitation. Its Outreach Training Program FAQ says OSHA does not certify organizations or individuals and that an OSHA card is not a certification or licence, so a course sold as OSHA mold certification is a private course.
Can you get a mold remediation certification online?
Partly. ACAC offers online video-proctored exams and the IICRC MRS exam is proctored online, so the experience-based routes need no travel. The IICRC lists live-stream delivery for courses such as WRT. Fully online certificates exist, such as the MICRO CMRC at $450 according to its seller, but name no accrediting body.
Are mold remediation companies certified?
Certifications attach to people. A company can join the IICRC Certified Firm programme, which needs one certified technician, proof of liability insurance and a $25 application fee, renewing at $199 a year, per the IICRC. In Florida, Texas, New York and Louisiana the state also licenses the work separately.
Is mold remediation a good career?
Federal data group it under hazardous materials removal workers. The BLS reports a median wage of $49,450 in May 2025, 52,700 jobs in 2025 and 2 percent projected growth to 2035, slower than average. Entry is typically a high school diploma. Our restoration technician pay page has trade wage data.
